About Terry Fox and the Marathon of Hope

The Terry Fox Run is an annual non-competitive charity event takes places around the world in commemoration of Canadian cancer activist Terry Fox, and his Marathon of Hope, and to raise money for cancer research.

After losing his leg to sarcoma cancer, Terry’s goal was to raise fund from every Canadian to help cancer research. On April 12, 1980, Terry Fox departed from St. John’s Newfoundland and attempt to run across the country to spread the word and raise money.

After running 5,373 kilometres, Terry was forced to stop his journey in Thunder Bay on September 1st, 1980 due to the return of sarcoma cancer. Before passing at the age of 22, Terry had raised over $1.7 million for cancer research.

Students at the Giles School had a conversation about the example that Terry Fox set for Canadians and participated in the run.
