As a French immersion school, The Giles School introduces French as the language of instruction in preschool. The result? Although the majority of children at The Giles School do not come from French speaking families, students beginning our programme at the Preschool level attain the native-like fluency of French peers the same age by Grade 3, without the assistance of bilingual parents.
Preschool children learn French through playful interaction involving stories, games, songs and other stimulating activities. A safe, intimate and nurturing classroom environment encourages children to take risks when speaking French and students’ efforts are consistently motivated by patient, positive reinforcement.
Does this strong French focus hamper progress in English? On the contrary, with a solid second language foundation, students go on to display improved academic performance in all subjects including English.
At the Pre-K level, children at The Giles School can enroll in a full or half-day programme. As an alternate to full-time attendance, we offer a half-day option where children can leave around 12:30 each day. Pre-K students learn best in the morning and because it is an advanced curriculum, children who are only present for half of the lessons learn at half the pace. For that reason, we offer either full days, five days a week or half days, five mornings a week.
If availability permits, children may also begin Pre-K in January, on a full-time basis only. Please contact us for information on January enrollment.
Pre-K children have 2 snacks and 3 recesses daily. Students also enjoy a 90-minute nap after lunch each day.
All children should be toilet trained before starting school but it is not compulsory. Incoming Pre-K students who have started the toilet training process but are not completed will be nurtured toward independent toilet routines.
The first floor west-wing of our school building is dedicated to Pre-Kindergarten classes. Large and bright classrooms house the tight-knit Pre-K community and dedicated washroom and lunch facilities provide for the needs of our youngest students in one area of the school.
Pre-K children attend age-appropriate off-site trips during the school year. Perennial favourites include treks to a local farm, the Ontario Science Centre and other play centres. Outings are designed to complement The Giles School’s educational programme and are tailored to the age and curriculum areas of Pre-K students.
