By the end of Grade 1 students are not only fluent French speakers, but are also able to read and write in French. A focus on writing skills helps children to compose stories and essays and express themselves creatively.
Although the majority of children at The Giles School do not come from French speaking families, our students attain native-like fluency in French by Grade 3 without the assistance of bilingual parents.
As a result of their French immersion instruction, students display improved academic performance in all subjects including English.
In Grade 2 and 3, children receive 45 minutes of English instruction everyday. Gym, Art, and Music may be taught in English as well. Most core subjects are studied in French throughout primary grades.
Once children have enough proficiency in French, they are introduced to Mandarin as a third language. If a student is not strong enough in French, the introduction of the third language will be postponed.
Third language instruction develops oral, reading and writing skills through activities such as drama, storytelling and song. When children’s optimal potential for language is tapped through multiple language learning, their capacity for abstract, critical thinking develops earlier.
The Giles School offers students from Grades 1 to 3 an exciting recreational afterschool programme. Activities are designed to complement the curriculum and may include music, art, sports, math and science in subject matter.
Trips may include museum exhibits, gallery shows, sporting events and cultural and community theatre.
