Starting at age 2.5, The Giles School French immersion Pre-K programme teaches children letters, numbers and French vocabulary.
Using interactive games, books and pictures, students begin to recognize and write letters and numbers. Using games and art projects specifically targeting particular skill sets, students learn while having fun. Every activity reinforces what they've learned.
Oral, Reading and Writing
Beginning on the first day of school, the homeroom teacher speaks only in French. Learning a letter a week, students recognize and write each letter of the alphabet as well as learning a multitude of French words that begin with that letter. Activities, such as colouring, involve pictures of the new French words learned that week.
Mathematics
In mathematics, the goal is to have students counting aloud to 60 by the end of the year, but students usually surpass this and reach 100. Students are taught to recognize and write numbers up to 20.
Music
Vocal music is an integral part of language acquisition, particularly for young children. As a result the regular classroom teacher will use French songs and music as a teaching strategy. Music is also taught in English by The Giles School music teacher. The Pre-K music class incorporates singing and the practice of simple rhythms. The students participate in at least 1 concert throughout the year.
Art
Children's drawings and sketches are their first attempts at a second symbol system. It is the developmental precursor to writing letters and eventually words and sentences. In the Pre-K classroom art is used by the classroom teacher as the conduit between the spoken word and the written word. From time to time art activities are used to support a particular theme or unit.
Gym
Students play physical games such as Duck Duck Goose as well as benefitting from a simple exposure to soccer and basketball.
