Junior School
By the end of Grade 1, students are not only fluent French speakers but are also able to read and write in French and English. A focus on writing skills helps children to compose stories and essays in both French and English. Although the majority of children at The Giles School do not come from French speaking families, students attain native-like fluency in French by Grade 3 without the assistance of bilingual parents. As a result of their French immersion instruction, students display improved academic performance in all subjects including English.
In Grade 1, students are introduced to a third language of either Mandarin or Japanese. If a student is not strong enough in French, the introduction of the third language will be postponed. Third language instruction develops oral, reading and writing skills through activities such as drama, storytelling and cooking.
In Grades 2 and 3, children receive 45 minutes of English instruction everyday. Social studies, gym, art, music and computer science may be taught in English as well. Most core subjects are studied in French throughout primary grades.
