Effective September 2013 changes and adjustments will take effect regarding our after school programme. These changes are founded on multiple and ongoing sources of feedback and data received throughout the school year, reflecting our ongoing commitment to improve the quality of programming offered at The Giles School.
Period 10, 3:45 pm to 4:30 pm, will remain as part of the timetable but will be scheduled as an optional activity period for all students and will be supervised and presented by the Giles staff. Changes to note:
Below are descriptions of the changes and adjustments organized for each division including the Period 10 activities.
Pre-K through SK students will continue through Period 10 with various activities including art/colouring, using play dough, making crafts, playing educational games and story telling.
Grade 1 will have 3 Co-operative Games and 2 Study/Homework periods per week. The specific schedule of days will be set in the fall.
Among the key objectives of Co-operative Games period is:
Grade 2 will have 1 iPad Introduction and 2 Cooperative Games and 2 Study periods.
Grade 3 will have 2 iPad Introduction and 3 Study periods.
Grades 2 and 3 will have 2 Choir periods per week scheduled into the regular school day timetable with the intent of developing a Primary Choir for entry into selected choral competitions.
In order to develop and nurture our music program we will be offering 2 choir periods on Monday and Tuesday in which we hope to develop a Junior Division Choir that will enter choral competitions during the year.
Jazz Band will continue to be offered on the last period on Fridays.
Parents and staff have expressed a concern about the amount of time spent at home on completing assignments and homework. In order to increase the amount of available family time or alternative activity time each night we will provide 3 teacher supervised Study/Homework periods from Wednesday to Friday
