Grade 1 is the last point of entry into The Giles School where students who have no previous French experience can be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with no pre-screening, standardized tests or any other form of evaluation. Transferring to the Giles School from Grade 2 and on is possible, however students must first meet certain minimum French language criteria and participate in a language evaluation before being invited into the programme. Each child is unique and therefore all student transfers are handled on a case-by-case basis. Our goal in evaluation is to ensure that the student can enter The Giles School programme, learn consistently and with confidence and achieve the same level of excellent fluency as his/her peers.
The Giles School programme is founded in French Immersion and as such all students applying for transfer must have French language experience as part of their personal or educational background. This experience must have included at least one of the following:
Once it is determined that the minimum French language experience criteria have been met, a French language ability evaluation will be conducted to determine whether we can ensure the child will enter our immersion programme at their grade level and keep a learning pace with peers. As a community we want our students to excel both academically and socially, and with that in mind we strive to evaluate whether a student whose language skills might not be at the optimum level may be placed in our programme and not lose confidence in their learning abilities. Students who are accepted into the programme but who are behind their classmates in French language skills may defer third language classes so the homeroom teacher can help bring their abilities to a satisfactory level in-line with their peers. Our nurturing learning environment gives students every opportunity to be successful and in evaluating transfer students we ensure that they each have the qualities that will help them bridge any gaps in their learning and reach their fullest potential.
We would love to meet with you to discuss your child’s transfer to The Giles School.
