Nadia has provided assurance and business advisory services to Canadian and foreign companies. She is a partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP in the private company services group where she serves a multitude of clients in the not-for-profit sector. Nadia is a graduate of the University of Waterloo Masters of Accountancy program and holds both the Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant and a Certified Public Accountant designations.
Nadia became Chair of the Board of Directors in January 2017.
Nadia has previously served on other boards in the area of early childhood education. She is bilingual and completed her elementary and secondary studies in French and is a parent at the Giles School.
Harry Giles is a pioneer in education and is regarded as one of the most influential educators in Canada. He established the prestigious pre-university competitions, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads, and started the first GCE Ordinary (“O”) & Advanced (“A”) examination centre in Canada. He assisted in the creation of the International Baccalaureate and established the first examination centre of the International Baccalaureate in Canada. Mr. Giles has participated actively in worldwide educational communities including representing Canada at the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th International Curriculum Conferences.
As founder and, for twenty-five years, headmaster of the Toronto French School, Mr. Giles introduced immersion bilingual education in Canada, and helped promote it across the country. He also introduced and implemented the first early intervention programmes in Canadian schools. The results of the students at that time were unrivalled, indicating the staggering potential of early education. His work continued at The Giles School as he has sought to change the educational system in Canada.
Mr. Giles is a Queen’s Counsel. He holds both the Golden Jubilee and Commemorative medals and received membership in the Order of Canada in 1973 for his initiative in creating and directing the first private school in Toronto offering instruction in the French language.
Mr. Giles has also served as president of a chemical company, an economist in Canada and the Middle East and director of various public and private corporations. His publications include “Schools and Students: Legal Aspects of Administration” as well as poetry, a play and numerous articles in journals.
Mr. Giles has a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto (Toronto, Ontario) as well as a Bachelor of Laws from Osgoode Hall (Toronto, Ontario).
Mr. Giles was the Director of Education at The Giles School until his retirement in 2010 and is now an honorary Director and educational advisor to the Board of Directors.
Jonathan joined The Giles School Board of Directors in April 2011 and served as its Chair from May 2013 through January 2017. All three of his children have all attended the School. He is a Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario and Chief Financial Officer at OMERS, one of Canada’s largest pension funds with over $72B in net assets and approximately 450,000 members. Prior to joining OMERS in 2014, Jonathan spent 22 years practicing public accounting in the firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he was a partner and the firm’s national insurance sector leader. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom.
Jonathan also serves as a director of United Corporation Limited, a closed ended investment company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, and is a treasurer of the Futurpreneur Canada, a national charity that provides pre-launch coaching, business resources, start-up financing and mentoring for youth age 18-34 to help start a business. He is a volunteer fundraiser for the MS Society of Canada.
Kimberly Carter is a Course Instructor in the Trudeau Centre for Peace, Conflict and Justice at the Munk School of Global Affairs. She holds a PhD in Political Science (International Relations and Women & Gender Studies) from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral research examined how grassroots actors are essential for improving women’s rights and basic security in post-conflict Central America. As an Ontario Graduate Scholar, she published the peer-reviewed article now cited in the Oxford Handbook of Gender and Politics (2013), which “contains and reflects the best scholarship in its field”. In 2014, she held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Munk School of Global Affairs’ Global Justice Lab, furthering her research interests on gender, security and human rights in conflict and post-conflict contexts. Most recently, she was a College Professor in the Department of Political Science at Okanagan College, teaching courses on global politics, human rights, and gender and politics. She has also taught undergraduate courses in International Relations and Women & Politics at the University of Toronto as well as conducted ethnographic research for numerous Fortune 500 companies on the values and beliefs driving consumer habits.
Lindsay Grange joined the Giles board in January 2017. She has worked in the fundraising and events sector for the past 12 years and is currently the Manager of Special Events at St. Michael’s Foundation in Toronto. Prior to joining the team at St. Michael’s, Lindsay was the Senior Manager of Events Rethink Breast Cancer. She has also worked at the MS Society of Canada and the Canadian Cancer Society. Lindsay holds a BA from Dalhousie University and is a graduate of the Toronto French School.
Sandra Nelson joined the Giles School Board of Directors in 2017. She is current Head of the Languages Department at Havergal College, formerly holding the same position at The York School and Collège Mont Notre-Dame de Sherbrooke where she taught in the International Baccalaureate Diploma and Middle Years programs for over 15 years. Sandra has taught French in Toronto and English in Québec, developing curricula that invite students to build invaluable skills to become effective communicators with linguistic and cultural knowledge, appreciation, and fluency, showing their curiosity, versatility, and savoir-faire. She is a graduate of the University of Toronto (St. Michael’s College) (Honours B. A.: English and French Language and Literature), Université Laval (Diplôme d’études en français, langue seconde), and Université de Sherbrooke (Certificat d’aptitude pédagogique à l’enseignement au secondaire). She has both Québec and Ontario teaching certificates, as well as a diploma in Independent School Leadership from Canadian Accredited Independent Schools (CAIS).
Kerry O’Reilly Wilks is the Head of Legal, North Atlantic & UK, for Vale’s Base Metals Business. Vale is one of the largest mining companies in the world. In this role, Kerry oversees all legal issues arising in North America and the UK, including litigation, projects, operations, strategic planning, environmental, health and safety. Prior to this position, Kerry sat as the Head of Legal, Corporate and Marketing, for Vale’s Base Metals Business, as well as the Global Chief IT Counsel for Vale globally across all business lines. In this role, Kerry was the executive and senior legal officer responsible for advising executive management on legal issues and risk concerning corporate, treasury, securities, corporate governance, finance, tax, strategic alliances and marketing. She has also filled a senior strategic advisory role regarding Vale’s Asia-Pacific affiliates, as Head of Legal, Asia Pacific, where she faced all the challenges associated with being the legal representative of a publicly traded multinational dealing with foreign governments, foreign regulators and significant business partners. Kerry has also been a driving force for innovative projects at Vale, including the creation of a legal knowledge management system.
Prior to joining Vale, Kerry was a partner with Davies, Ward, Phillips & Vineberg LLP, a leading business law firm, focusing on multi-million dollar securities offerings and M&A transactions.
Kerry was named as one of Lexpert’s Rising Stars – Top 40 under 40 lawyers in Canada in 2012. She is also the Founder and Chairperson of Malachy’s Soiree, an annual gala and auction in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto.
Kerry sits on the Board of Directors of St. Michael’s Hospital, as well as on the Business Services Committee and Research & Education Committee of the Board of Directors of St. Michael’s Hospital.
Kemp Rickett is a leading educator in North America, Great Britain, Europe and South East Asia. As a teacher and principal in publicly funded schools for 32 years he has administrative experience in both elementary and secondary schools as well as dual track French Immersion, Inner City Project and Alternative schools. As Principal of Dundas PS Mr. Rickett was a recipient of the Ministry of Education “Exemplary Practices in Integration” award. Most recently he served as Director of Education, B and B International (Korean ESL Academies) in Toronto where he was responsible for all facets of the operation of the schools.
Mr. Rickett’s publications include a teacher education book entitled ‘Perspectives on Small Group Learning – Theory and Practice’, a six part series of ESL textbooks and many newspaper and magazine articles. He has been the keynote speaker at numerous international conferences in Canada, USA, Europe and South East Asia, focusing on educational administration, curriculum development and effective pedagogy.
Mr. Rickett’s community involvement includes a diverse list of youth at risk, athletic, native, food bank and legal aid associations where he has served as founding member, chairman, member of the Board of Directors or Executive Director.
Mr. Rickett holds a Master of Education from the University of Toronto, Toronto Ontario and a Bachelor of Art (Honors) from Wilfred Laurier University, Waterloo Ontario. In addition to Teacher Qualifications he has certificates in Principals I, Principals II and Supervisory Officers Certification from the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Mr. Rickett has served as the Vice-Chairman of the Giles School Board of Directors since 2007. In December 2007 he became Headmaster and served in the post until February 2017. He now serves as an ex-officio Director and Consulting Superintendent for the school.
